Local Business Spotlight - Aud & El Apothecary of Westborough, MA

I recently had the opportunity to interview Tiffany Williams of Aud & El Apothecary! Tiffany started off as a candle maker and has expanded to include self care items to help you lead a softer way of life in a chaotic world full of demands.

Q: What made you start Aud & El?

A: I have always been a creative maker. When my girls were young and I was home with them I began to think about how I could turn my creativity into a job. I really wanted to be able to stay home and be very present in their lives so I knew I did not want to work a traditional job. I started tinkering with candles and on a whim, I opened an Etsy shop. For many years it was a hobby, just bringing in some extra money but not much. When my girls both were in school full time I decided to dive in. I was going to give this business my all for a few years and see where I could take it!

Q: What’s a challenge you’ve faced in your business and how did you overcome it?

A: Everything to do with business is a challenge for me. I am good with creative things and coming up with new ideas but the back end of the business is such a struggle. I am disorganized so that impacts my supplies, my bills, my finances, etc. The best thing I ever did was hire my sister! This part of the business is not my zone of genius but it is certainly hers! She cleaned everything up and things run much smoother now!

Q: What’s your favorite part about having a business?

My favorite part about having my own business is just being my own boss. The flexibility is really valuable to my family. We have two young girls and I am able to be there for them whenever they need me. If something comes up I can stop what I am doing. If my husband has a day off we can go out to lunch. It’s the simple, small, everyday perks that I love the most.

Q: What plans do you have for the future of Aud & El?

A: So many plans! My mind is always creating, and thinking, and swirling in new fun directions. Sometimes I have to slow myself down because I get too far ahead. Right now, I am really focused on my seasonal bundles. I love curating each box and I get so excited for the next season. In addition, I do want to continue to expand my bath and body line. I have started learning about herbal remedies and how to make salves, tinctures, and other body care products all from things found in nature. If you know me you know nature is my fav so it makes sense.

Q: What advice would you give to someone starting a business?

A: My advice would be to be brave but set realistic goals. We so often hear people say “I woke up one day and decided I was going to quit my job!” but that is not always possible. It’s ok for you to have a side hustle for a while. Plant your seeds, nurture them and then watch them grow. Once they are strong and stable you can start taking risks like quitting your day job. It does not have to be all at once. Fear can stop people from exploring their dreams but it shouldn’t. You can have your stable job and your dreams on the side at first!
